Kamishiro and Kirishima: Ends of a Spectrum

(Alternatively: Women Too Pretty to Ignore So I Wrote About Them)

Thanks to @just-another-tokyo-ghoul-fan for unlocking a part of my brain I didn’t even know existed. It’s definitely not like Touka is tied for 2nd place for my favorite character in TG. No, sir.

As always, I’m using the official translations because of my monolingual curse.

Under the cut.

Let’s get this out of the way first. Rize and Touka are not friends. I doubt they could ever be friends due to their opposing philosophies. They are fundamentally different people who should not be left in the same room together. Why?

Besides the obvious, it’s because they view their common circumstance-- being born a ghoul-- very differently.

Touka blames her status as a ghoul on the reason why she’s had to run and hide her whole life, especially after losing both her mother and father. Rize prides herself on her ghouls powers because being a ghoul in the Garden meant a lifetime of imprisonment, and she wanted out. Touka is tethered down by her identity, while Rize flies around using it.

Ironically, Touka becomes “free” at the end while Rize remains trapped and dies. Let’s tackle that next. Why, in the context of the overall story, does Touka live, and Rize die? It’s pretty straightforward, fortunately.

Rize doesn’t confront her problems, instead electing to always run away. Whenever she gets bored, she leaves. Whenever someone, in her view, tries to tether her down, she leaves. Because she doesn’t want to return to anything resembling that helpless womb in the Garden. Watch:

Running away isn’t a bad thing in a vacuum. Personally, I think you should try to run away when you can afford to. But the thing about Rize’s brand of running away is that she forces the consequences of her actions onto someone else. Like Banjou, who was forced to take over the 11th ward because she killed the last one. Shachi as well, who takes the fall for her and gets imprisoned in Cochlea.

And as a result of her constant running and tendency to leave behind no trace, any chance at a meaningful connection is lost. No one really helps her, because she’s already disappeared. She literally cannot be helped. One of the positive themes of TG is the achievements people can achieve together. Rize, embodying the opposite of this, does not achieve anything substantial. And in the end, she is reduced to someone else’s plaything with no mind of her own.

It’s sad.

Meanwhile, Touka reaches out to people (when the story wants her to). Because unlike Rize, who does the leaving, Touka is the one who is left behind. She deeply understands the loss and hurt that comes with it, and she has tempered that helpless feeling into a kind hand to reach out to anyone.

And I mean anyone.

God, she’s so cool. Peak big sister. I wish we saw more of it; her contributions to Goat would have changed the tides if the story just let her.

But it’s because of this willing to work together with people, seek peace through proactive methods, that she succeeds and lives through the horrors of the world. She uplifts those around her and is lifted up in return. Kindness begets kindness, and I’d say kindness is one of the best parts of living.

[05/12] Deepspace Trials Progression

I'm a day late to post my weekly Deepspace Trials Progression recap since it was late by the time I finished all my runs yesterday (a delayed maintenance happened), but overall this past Sunday was a very good prog day! ☆ Xavier : 3/3 - cleared stages 110 to 112; going on stage 113 ☆ Zayne : 3/3 - cleared stages 117 to 119; going on stage 120 ☆ Rafayel : 0/3 - currently stuck on stage 110 ☆ Open Orbit : currently stuck on stage 120

Stage 110

FINALLY. AFTER WEEKS OF TRIAL AND ERROR AND INVESTING SO MANY RESOURCES INTO PROTOCORE FARMING! The game decided to bless me with 3-Emerald CRIT rate deltas. Sure, a couple of them weren't the most ideal substats but one of them was decent. I tapped one to +12 and two to +9 to replace 1-DMG to Weakened and 2-CRIT DMG protocores I was previously using. I also replaced a CRIT DMG with one I replaced for a CRIT rate. I also tapped that +9 CRIT DMG to +12 and a beta core to +12. Lots of upgrades and protocore shuffling were done, but that seem to give me damage I needed to clear the fight! I will upload my clear vod in another post and will update the link here.

Stage 111 + Stage 112

Stage 111 required 5-Emerald + 1-Sapphire. Apparently my highest level sapphire memroy for Xavier is lv 30 LOL... I don't want to upgrade it right now cause I'm saving upgrade resources for Xavier's Shimmering Moonlight banner, but it's fine. I was able to clear the stage without any trouble on auto battle. Stage 112's Protofield Stellactrum is the same as Stage 111 so I didn't swap out my team set up or make any changes to their protocores. It was a very close one but I was able to clear it via auto battle with 1 second left on the timer...

Stage 117

This stage had no protofield stellactrum to match so I used highest leveled memories. I probably could have done this on auto with ease, but watching MC hold ALL of Zayne's stacks just made my soul die a little. A side note, I also leveled up Zayne's affinity here from 87 to 88!

Stage 118 + Stage 119

Stage 118 is a break crystal stage. It required 5-Ruby + 1-Violet. If you've been following me for a while then you probably know how much of a struggle my ruby build is for Zayne. So I opted ignore the Protofield Stellactrum and go off color. Having a perfect match for this type of combat stage doesn't matter since my goal is to break the 2 crystals, not defeat all of the wanderers. Stage 119 had the same stellactrum as 118, but I also ignored the colors again to just manually brute force it for the clear! No changes were made. The same team set up and protocores were used in this fight. We do 120 on Tuesday!!

I'm still at a loss here... I tapped beta core to +12, swapped a +9 CRIT DMG with a different one with better substats. Didn't see any improvements from the last time. I'm thinking I need to find better delta cores, so that'll be my focus going into this week after I level up Xavier's new solar myth pairs.

Dark Inheritance - Chapter 1 - Loss

After his grandfather's death, Mutou Yugi inherits Sugoroku's long-abandoned childhood home in the remote northern prefecture of Aomori.

Kame Game Shop, Domino City, Japan

Week 1 - March, 2014, Monday…

Darkness blanketed the city, the half moon only occasionally peeking through thick gray clouds. Most lights in homes had been extinguished for the night, the only remaining being the street lights. The small yellow game shop with the green turtle on its sign was an exception to this rule.

Inside, two men sat hunched over a table, upon which reposed a game of shogi. Seeing his chance, the younger of the two made his move, taking the elder’s queen off the board and cornering his king.

“Checkmate, Grandpa!” the young man declared, large lilac irises shining with exultation.

Mutou Sugoroku smiled tenderly at his grandson.

"You've done it, Yugi. You've surpassed me," the old man said, aged lilacs glowing with pride.

"Thanks, Grandpa!" returned Yugi warmly as he gathered the pieces.

"And as a celebration of your achievement, I want you to have… this!" announced Sugoroku, reaching behind him and pulling out a beautiful golden box covered in hieroglyphs, the chief of which was a large eye that seemed to stare at one from the front of it. This, he proffered to Yugi.

"Grandpa!" breathed Yugi as he opened the lid, revealing solid gold what appeared to be puzzle pieces inside it.

"I found it in my home as a boy," Sugoroku explained as Yugi pulled out a piece and gazed at it. "I worked on it for years, but could never solve it. I think you’ll succeed where I failed."

"I’ll solve it, Grandpa, and show it to you as soon as I’m done," Yugi promised as he raised his eyes to his grandfather.

"I'm so..." Sugoroku's eyes went unfocused as a gasp was ripped from his mouth and he clutched his chest. "Ha-ah!"

"Grandpa!" cried Yugi, puzzle piece slipping from his grip as he lunged toward his grandfather.

Catching Sugoroku in his arms, Yugi gently lowered him to the floor and pulled him onto his lap.

"Grandpa?! Grandpa?! Talk to me!! What's wrong?!!!" Yugi cried as tears of panic flooded his eyes.

"Don't cry... Yugi. I’ve been living on… borrowed time…" said Sugoroku, even as the light slowly faded from his eyes. "Live with honor and pride, my grandson."

"Grandpa, please..." sobbed Yugi.

But Grandpa’s eyes were glazed over as he looked at things seen only to him.

"I kept my promise, At..."

Sugoroku exhaled a final, rattly breath as his head lolled to the side.

"Grandpa? Grandpa?!! Uuaaaaahhhh!!!" Yugi cried, lowering his head and sobbing into the green denim of Sugoroku's overalls.

Taking a deep hitching breath, Yugi forced himself to regain his senses. He had to call someone, get help. With shaking hands, he fumbled to pull his phone from his pocket and dial his best friend since high school.

'Please be there...'

"Yuug?"

"Jou... my grandpa just died," Yugi announced, choking back a sob.

"Wha?! Wadda hell? Wha’ happen'd?!" asked Jounouchi Katsuya.

"I dunno. We were playing shogi and he just collapsed and died!" Yugi answered, voice rising and breaking as grief overwhelmed him again.

"'K, man. Hang on. I'll be right ovah. Ya gotta call 119 in ‘a meantime," advised Jou.

"OK..." sighed Yugi as they hung up.

Soon…

Yugi felt as though he were watching through someone else’s eyes as his grandfather’s body was stuffed into a bag, put on a stretcher, and loaded into the ambulance. By his side, Jou laid a supportive hand on Yugi’s shoulder by way of grounding him.

Grateful for Jou’s stabilizing presence, Yugi followed the blond mutely out of the shop and sat in the passenger seat of his buddy’s red convertible for the long ride to the hospital.

Domino General

Early Tuesday…

Yugi and Jou listened mutely as the doctor explained that Sugoroku had died of a heart attack. Jou thanked the doctor as Yugi turned and walked mutely away, staring at the linoleum floor.

The ride home was silent, neither friend able to think of anything to say or do.

"Tex’ me if ya need anythin’," Jou said as he pulled up to the curb.

"I will," Yugi sighed as he opened the door and stepped out.

"See ya," said Jou with a sad smile as he watched his friend shuffle slowly toward the door to let himself into the shop.

After Yugi gave a final, spiritless, wave through the window, Jou threw his car into gear and peeled out.

After closing the curtain, Yugi began his slow journey through the silent solitude of the shop, stopping at the doorway of each room and remembering Grandpa doing different things: selling games and toys in the shop, cooking meals in the kitchen, watching TV in the living room, working in his office, perhaps reading a novel in his bedroom. And of course their games together: chess, checkers, shogi, Monopoly, all manner of card games.

‘Just memories now,’ Yugi thought sorrowfully.

When Yugi entered Grandpa’s office, he saw the hastily discarded puzzle box still reposing on the game table and the center piece he had dropped to the floor when Grandpa had collapsed. He stooped down and picked it up, staring at the Eye of Wadjet, which gazed steadily back at him. Abruptly, Yugi threw it back into the box and banged the lid down.

With the urgency of the situation now past, Yugi could feel the sleeplessness of the night before catching up with him as his eyelids began to feel like lead. He blundered to his bedroom and collapsed on his bed, asleep as soon as his head hit the pillow.

But even in sleep, there was to be no succor for him, as his grandfather’s smiling face filled his dreams, causing his heart to soar before eventually crashing down as he headed for wakefulness and the reality that his grandfather was no longer with him.

Wednesday…

Yugi stood in a daze as the charred fragments of what had once been his jolly grandfather were passed directly between sets of chopsticks and deposited in the urn he held in a special pair of long chopsticks at the head of the pyre slab.

He was beyond thankful when the Adam's apple was set into the urn and the ofuda sealed everything up. After the soshikigumi took the urn to inter, he was finally able to leave that morbid place.

Yugi climbed into the passenger seat. The key was turned and the engine roared to life.

"How ya holdin' up, Yuug?" asked Jou as they pulled out.

"I'll live. Thanks for coming, Jou. I couldn't get through this without you," replied Yugi, throwing a quick, but sincere, gaze in the blond's direction.

"'No sweat. Dat's wut buddies do fer each othah," returned Jou.

"Right," sighed Yugi.

"Want me t' spend da night?" Jou asked.

"If it wouldn't be too much trouble," Yugi answered.

"No trouble 't all," said Jou with a reassuring smile Yugiward.

That night…

Yugi sobbed heartbrokenly into his pillow while Jou tossed and turned in his bed in the guestroom, the sound of Yugi’s sobs muffled not one iota by the hallway separating them.

'Mah poor lil buddy,' the blond thought sorrowfully, blinking at the suspicious moisture in his own eyes.

Day 119! And even with my classes I was able to draw quite a bit! (I think I’m getting good that ahah, watch that be a jinx and I do none tomorrow)

So I tried more legs and actually tried to do a more complicated pose that connects them a bit to the torso, aka the top one, and for a first try, I think it looks really good actually! It might need a few tweaks but overall I really like the look of it!

And that torso in the bottom right is actually my favorite that I’ve done so far! I’m pretty proud!

Today's Focus

02.06.24 - I am super pretty in pink today and frankly my morning is going better than a usual Monday 2.0 does so I'm counting my blessings. It's my mother's birthday so I'm going to give her a call when I take lunch today, but it's hit or miss if I'll get her because she's sick now the way I was in the beginning of the year.

Work - I have an efile to take care of, and a new case for JMK to enter into NYM and create a physical file for. Other than that, I know SJC will want me to tackle something related to WvP - a letter to a defendant I think. But it's pretty quiet here overall.

Background Noise - I start today with 119 on the Watch Later, no thanks to my trolling somebody's channel for certain drama updates. Since I'm still working my way through the accumulative five (5) hours of initial Mamamax drama, I'm alternating with a shorter video from the watch later every....15-20 min or so.

See and I only managed to get through like nine (9) videos yesterday so I need to step on the gas here or tomorrow is going to suck ass.

That means I have to push off the homemade meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and mushroom gravy until like Thurs or Fri when I have more time to make it; in its place I'm moving up the Polish sausage & pierogi because that meal won't take more than an hr to make.

Honestly I really loved the Flying Yoga episodes and the last Field Day, and Telepathy had it’s charm. I didn’t really hate any of the new ones in their entirety looking back, and each episode had at least several moments that made me laugh or smile… but I guess the energy just felt lacking sometimes? I think some of them just felt a bit boring too maybe (probably because I wasn't a huge fan of some of the concepts). I think it didn’t help that they had the whole “hiatus” thing looming over them.

Tbh, I’ve still yet to get through every Run episode, especially some of the later ones (because I started watching them chronologically) so I’m probably missing some key moments! But here are some of the ones I really enjoyed!

21 - “The Taste of Korea” (this is the first cooking episode so it just has lots of iconic moments!) 25 - “BTS vs Zombie” (a true classic imo) 52 - “The 50th Episode Special, Pt. 2” (I just love theme parks) 54-56 - “BTS Picnic pt 1-4” (kind of like a mini BV with some strong sentimental moments at the end) 64-66 - “BTS school pt1-3” 70-72 - “BTS in Toronto pt1-3” (another mini BV) 80-81 - “Operation 007 pt1-2” (definitely a fan favorite) 84-86 - “Summer Outing pt1-3” (1000% recommend these) 105-107 - “Photo Exhibition pt1-3” (has a really iconic Jimin moment at the end) 119-120 - “Photo Story pt1-2” 127-128 - “777 Lucky Seven pt 1-2” (two of my favorite episodes ever! underrated imo) 141-142 - “BTS Collaboration Variety Show pt1-2" (this is part of a collaboration with the Game Caterer’s, so some of the episodes are on their Youtube channel. Here’s a playlist with the other parts if you’re interested!

IIRC you watch Run BTS 141 and then 1-3 off this playlist, Run BTS 142 and then the rest. The first three YouTube videos where they each have a secret mission are definitely at the top of my list, so chaotic and funny!)

What Choso would be like having a crush

somebody help this man

I feel like he´d crush on people easily, especially if they´re nice to him

kindness is something very strange and foreign to him so he has trouble differentiating between romantic and platonic love

plus he doesn´t have a type so he literally thinks everyone is utterly beautiful

he cannot talk to his crush for the life of him

he overall struggles in striking up a conversation but if it´s with them it´s like his brain in completely empty

Choso´s a starer but in a non creepy way

he doesn´t even notice it, he is too caught up in his daydreams

when you smile at him he thinks it´s a dream as well

never approaches you because ýou´re way out of his league

it kind of brings him down a lot when he sees couples out and about 

Yuuji notices eventually and asks him about it

when Choso answers that he wants to have that with you he just goes: why don´t you ask them out then?

Choso completely blacks out like he can do that ?? 

he really doesn´t want to make you uncomfortable so he doesn´t want to approach you at all

but Yuuji does encourage him to at least talk to you and get to know you a bit

he even introduces the two of you and stays for the first few talks until Choso is less nervous around you

and he is quite happy with how far he got, he never imagined you´d want to talk to him so for him that´s a massive win

however he doesn´t know how to convey his romantic feelings to you, he´s way too self conscious and doesn´t want to be overbearing

but since Yuuji can´t really help him because of his lack of experience he suggets asking Gojo about it

since Choso is new to the field and doesn´t have any experience he trusts Yuuji and consults the teacher

however he doesn´t quite agree with his tips and so he thinks back to the first thing Yuuji has said to him: just be yourself

he kind of needs a push from Yuuji to actually talk to you but once he does he manages quite well

he doesn´t trip over his words like he feared and more than anything, he loves talking to you 

he´s still not over his shy nature but you think it´s cute how giddy he gets and how his eyes light up whenever you´re in the room

you´re the one to ask him on a second date and from then on it´s a back and forth 

sometimes he gets a rush of courage and gets super excited when he finds a new place that you would like and takes you there on a whim

he gets super comfortable around you and getting together is really casual

one day you´re cuddling while watching a movie and he just looks at you with the biggest heart eyes: I wanna stay like this forever

Plane (2023)

"Pilot Brodie Torrance saves passengers from a lightning strike by making a risky landing on a war-torn island -- only to find that surviving the landing was just the beginning. When dangerous rebels take most of the passengers hostage, the only person Torrance can count on for help is Louis Gaspare, an accused murderer who was being transported by the FBI."

It's been a while since I've seen a decent action film that didn't require a huge amount of brain power to watch. You know the kind of thing, a popcorn chomping, adrenaline fuelled, action movie that you can just sit through and enjoy, even though you know it's probably not going to be the greatest film ever. Well, tonight I did just that.

I'll be honest, I walked into the movie with certain expectations based on my knowledge of, and history of watching, this kind of movie. The main character was going to be ex-special forces with "a specific set of skills". He was going to do all sorts of awesome fighting moves, and somehow manage to kill 20 men with just a bent knife and a smile. I'm honestly pleased to say that those expectations were NOT met.

Gerard Butler plays Captain Brodie Torrance, pilot for Trailblazers Airline and captain of flight 119. Pretty early on you find out that he was military, but not the way I expected. He's an ex-RAF cargo pilot who moved into civilian Airlines when his military career finished. He's a world weary, close to average, guy who is simply trying to get to his daughter for the New Year. Butler has played a number of action roles where he was 'the hero' so to see him as just a guy who's trying to save his passengers is a nice touch. It's a solid performance from Butler and, while it probably won't win him any awards, it's a decent addition to his movie catalogue.

That's not to say special forces aren't part of the film. Mike Colter, best known as Luke Cage in the Netflix Marvel shows, plays Louis Gaspare. Louis is introduced to the film as a prisoner on the flight who was wanted for a homicide 15 years previously. He tells Brodie later that he was part of the French Foreign Legion, who are a highly trained and lethal fighting force. Ta Dah! Ex-special forces...Colter's performance is decent enough, and he executes his role as the hard ass killer as needed. Yet, while I enjoyed watching him I couldn't help thinking that he seemed like a personality trait of a main character, rather than a fleshed out character of his own. Though that may be due to my expectations of the main character going in.

The director, Jean-Francois Riçhet, has done a good job with the film. He gave us scenes of . tension, some pretty brutal deaths and one of the most 'fun' gunfights I've seen in a film in a long while. He clearly enjoys what he did with this film and his choices of shots and locations were really rather good. The effects team had fun as well, that much is obvious but I won't say too much. That needs to be seen on the screen.

Overall it's good film. It's a little shy of two hours long, but I did not feel that at all. It felt much quicker than that and I think that is down to the speed of the scenes, and no one section running long. I really enjoyed it for what it is. It's a fairly straight forward action flick, with a little character twist. Is it going to set the world alight? Unlikely. Is it going to completely change the action genre? Not even slightly. But did I enjoy myself for the entire film? Absolutely, and for that it's getting a solid 7/10, with a recommendation to definitely give it a go. You might have an absolute blast.

Why do you think cpom always do good in the RD and place quite high, but then they always go down by at least two spots with the FD? I didn’t get to watch yesterday’s free yet, but in the RD I thought they had improved, so I don’t understand them going from 5th to 7th, since the two teams who ended up above them seemed worse than them in the RD.

CPom are an interesting case that is really making me pause right now. Like you I saw visible improvement in the RD and were really shocked to see this morning that they dropped to 7th overall. So I decided to first watch their 2020 US championships FD which scored 116.14 with an invalidated choreo element (meaning it would have been ~119-120) and then watch the one from last night. And let me tell you, these scores are bullshit.

They had essentially the same BV in both seasons (0.4 difference in BV). They were tight twice in the FD- Anthony had issues on the 2nd set of twizzles and on the stationary lift, but the GOEs were just not there last night and for no good reason tbh, the twizzles got a bigger dinge than the rest who made similar mistakes, the choreo elements got low GOEs and same for the step sequences. And since they got -1 for an extended lift and lost GOEs for twizzles and the lift, it had a big impact. But what's worse is their PCS, it was dropped 3.54 points which is MASSIVE.

Which makes me think that while CPom are for sure experiencing some growing pains, this is starting to feel a lot like politicking. I don't know if it's because Scott is a new coach so he doesn't have the politicking power that I.AM and Igor have yet (Igor especially has a huge pull inside the USFS as the one who coaches most of their juniors), but this is feeling intentional to me, Green/Parsons had a twizzles issue that dropped them a level and got 1.87 GOE for it, CPom got 0.71 for theirs. And with the massive drop in PCS it's feeling intentional af.

I don't know what this placement means for CPom, will they still get GP assignments because of their international season best? I think their 4CC assignment is in jeopardy which is probably heartbreaking for them. If CPom will end up moving to Montreal next season, the cause will be the politicking tbh, nothing else, they looked shocked by the score and the placement.

Thoughts on Kyoru in Fruits Basket: The Final as a manga reader

(and bad metaphors about lava cake)

So with next week's impending shit storm of a Furuba episode next week, I've been doing some reflecting on our favorite Mutual Pining Idiots, Kyoru--and thinking about how the anime adaptation's choices in rearranging or removing content has impacted things, specifically with Se3E6.

And just to preface, I think the anime adaptation has been terrific overall. I also think loving something and critiquing something aren't mutually exclusive either. The goal of what I'm about to write is not to incite negativity, just to get some feelings out about my favorite pairing from my favorite manga series and provoke some deeper thought, I guess.

ALSO, I hope you don't mind metaphors--specifically ones about chocolate-raspberry lava cake, because that's what I've decided works best for explaining Kyoru. So FASTEN THOSE SEATBELTS PEOPLE 

MANGA SPOILERS regarding previously omitted content as well as VAGUE ANIME SPOILERS that can be implied/inferred from the ending of Se3E7 under the cut.

I think one of the (many) reasons I find Kyoru to be such a satisfying ship is because of the slow-burn element. Come season 2 through the beach arc, their chemistry is palpable, natural, and growing stronger and stronger with each episode. When Kyo finally admits to himself that he's in love with Tohru in Se2E9, it feels like we've been rewarded with a chocolate lava cake topped with raspberry sauce--it's delicious, complex, and full of gooey and satisfying substance.

Now like many, I'm a sucker for the pining idiot trope--let alone the MUTUAL pining idiot trope--and we do get to see this through the end of season 2 as Tohru's feelings for Kyo become more apparent to everyone BUT her. It's like we're LOOKING at the chocolate-raspberry lava cake, so close that we can ALMOST touch it, but we as viewers aren't allowed to cut into it yet--which makes every little encounter between the two of them all the more exciting, because we wonder what's finally going to allow us to ravish this goddamn lava cake (sorry).

Which is why I realized I'm actually struggling more than I initially thought in the final season. As it's been widely speculated, discussed, and now officially confirmed, we're getting 13 episodes this season. And while like most everyone else, I'd be thrilled with two cours, I don't know the ins and outs of anime production, AND, while I'm bummed, I've accepted that it is what it is--and that it isn't the reason I'm writing this post.

Of course not every panel or fleeting moment can be adapted from the manga to the anime. There were small little cuts here and there over the course of the first two seasons, but nothing in my opinion that's really SO substantial that it drained the lava cake of its filling--maybe some of that raspberry topping, but generally, the good stuff is all there. (Though I do love this moment below from chapter 82, which was skipped over in Se2E19)

The final season has been different, though. As we know in the manga, the inner turmoil for Kyo--and Tohru to an extent--really starts escalating immediately after Cinderella-ish with Kyoko's backstory and Kyo's nightmare from chapters 90-93. I also understand that Cinderella-ish was Se2E23, and with only 2 episodes left in the season, it made sense from a directorial standpoint to end with the Kureno/Akito reveal versus Kyoko's backstory and Kyo realizing he needs to know his place.

But without this context, it leaves moments like the flower scene from Se3E2 less impactful--like a lava cake made by someone who skimped on the filling. To an anime-only (and even as a manga reader), it's likely still a satisfying moment to watch: we know that Tohru clearly has a lot of inner turmoil following her conversation with Kureno. Kyo's turmoil following his nightmare, however--and overall, the sentiment of him thinking he needs to stay away from Tohru, yet still finding himself drawn to her above all odds--is deeply diminished.

Which leads me to the main reason (finally, sorry) that I wrote this post--Se3E6, or the episode when Tohru finally admits to herself AND to Rin that Kyo has taken the place of her mother as the most precious person to her. 

In the manga, Se3E6 is made up of chapters 107, 108, 109, AND 114, spanning the end of volume 18 through the beginning of volume 20 of the TokyoPop mangas. Volume 19 in particular is one of my all time favorite mangas in the entire series for one clear reason: just as we've seen Kyo get to do in season 2, we finally get to see Tohru slowly own her feelings for Kyo, and MY GOD, is cutting into that lava cake and enjoying that delicious filling satisfying AF. The Mutual Pining Idiots are in full swing here, both dealing with inner turmoil but also being unable to stay away from one another either. In addition, they're dealing with normal teenage awkwardness too, which feels like a bonus topping (would nuts go well, do we think? LOL) to the Kyoru lava cake.

But between the producers adapting Momiji's arc prior to episode 6 AND the producers ending episode 6 with a 2-minute horror movie essentially--AND, lest we forget, none of the Kyoko backstory at this point--we lost essentially all of that satisfying filling. 

And again, I understand, only 13 episodes and the producers are trying to make shit work and I do see why they made some of these changes in the overall big picture of things, but I wish it weren't at the expense of Tohru's character development and also for Kyoru, which had been so thoughtfully and delightfully well-developed in the first two seasons.

My biggest issue BY FAR with episode 6 is Tohru's confession to Rin happening before the sheets scene. The producers combined 109 and 114 for the second half of episode 6. In the manga, Tohru is able to openly admit that Kyo is the most important person to her BECAUSE of how he accepts her after she "opens the lid" to reveal the ugly feelings she's been harboring for years about her father. And in the manga, since we have the context of Kyoko's backstory and can see how she nearly committed suicide and left Tohru alone for days, it is gut-wrenching to finally hear Tohru confront and express her trauma in her own words. 

The sheets scene is arguably my favorite scene in the entire series. The anime portrayed it beautifully. Jerry and Laura ripped my heart out with their performances. It was a deeply moving scene (even with all of the changes) and the romance and pining was there--but, I hate to admit it, the feeling of cutting into that delicious lava cake to reveal that even more satisfying filling was not.

And now, come the end of Se3E7, we're approaching the climax of the series that we've been salivating for for so long now, the result of all of this inner turmoil and secrets and deep, deep longing for one another--and it almost feels now like the cake was baked too quickly, in addition to being drained of much of its filling. 

I was debating waiting to write this until next week after we see how Se3E8 goes, but my thoughts have been swirling about and this clown couldn’t help herself. I'd like to end this post on a hopeful and more forward-thinking note, though, if you've made it this far into my novel LOL.

There is definitely the potential to add a little more about Kyoko's backstory in next week's episode. I also expect that we'll hear more of Tohru's inner narrative and thoughts, which I’m really looking forward to. As several others have speculated as well, I predict that we'll be getting chapters 119-122 next week. Despite it being 4 chapters, everything should happen in sequence (versus with episode 6) and there's a lot of action, so I do feel like it won't feel rushed or disjointed. And while I could see them possibly ending with 121, 122 would be my preferred ending for many reasons (manga readers know where I'm going with this ;P) and I honestly see it fitting best there.

And regardless of what happens, I'm looking forward to eating whatever variety of lava cake is served to us next week.

And at the end of the day, we'll always have the manga, which will probably always be my favorite lava cake of all.

yeah of course I can tell you some!! my top three groups are nct, seventeen and stray kids, but i stan a handful more than those (I can talk about the other ones more if you want, I just dont wanna overwhelm u with information lol)

stray kids - my ult, currently has 8 members but started with 9 (we dont really talk about the ex member bc he turned out to be a really shitty dude), debuted in 2018 but had a predebut survival show in 2017 that determined the members of the group. even though the survival show isnt necessary viewing to stan them, I still recommend it bc it's a big part of their history (although it's kinda hard to find now with eng subs, unfortunately :/)

stray kids were monster rookies when they debuted, and (in my opinion) consistently self produce bangers. I'd recommend songs like gods menu, question, awkward silence and heros soup to get an idea of what kind of music they put out (they do a lot of different genres so I just picked a few of my favorites that arent too similar in sound). if you wanna get to know personalities more, you should probably check out some of their variety show episodes (weekly idol and whatnot, I'd recommend watching vlives but ever since they updated the website idk how to work it lol)

nct - has an infinite concept meaning the group can basically have new members whenever the company decides they want to add more. the group has subunits: nct u (interchangeable members, basically anyone can be in it depending on the song), nct dream (was supposed to be just for minors, but after fans complained a bunch about mark lee leaving the group since he was 20 years old, they made it so that there wasnt a graduating system anymore. not really sure what the concept for the group is now lol), nct 127 (none of the members leave the group but members can be added whenever) and technically wayv is apart of nct but sm (their company) half the time acts like they arent (wayv is a chinese subunit). uhhh this group is really hard to explain considering it has like 23 members now? I believe? does lots of different genres, each subunit has different dynamics, but overall they're all very talented and charming! I can't spit out facts about nct like I do skz bc I've been stanning skz since predebut but I only started stanning nct in 2018 and it's hard for me to keep up with them bc of all the different units 😭 but ik they debuted in 2016 and each subunit has put out a lot of bangers. I'll suggest a few songs from each unit tho :> (and if u wanna get to know their personalities, I'd recommend you watch variety shows for each unit like I said with skz. it's the easiest way to get to know a group, in my opinion)

seventeen - even tho they arent my ult, this group has talent that wows me more than any other group ever. literally not a single bad song, deadass the kings of choreography AND they're funnier than any other group I've ever stanned. would highly recommend seventeen as a group to start off with because even though they have a lot of members (13), theyre very memorable and they never fail to impress.

they debuted in 2015 ? I believe ? with, as I said, 13 members. each member falls into a subunit of either dance, vocal or hip hop, but these units dont serve a huge purpose as they make most of their music as a group and then each unit will usually have a song on the album. this group produces all of their music and has a huge part in basically everything they put out, making them a self produced idol group, which I think is poggers. i also just think this group is poggers bc they've made me enjoy ballads even tho i usually find them boring as fuck. if u wanna get to know them, try watching their episode on men on a mission (it is on netflix) I genuinely think it's like the funniest variety show episode I've ever seen a group do.

Film Narrative 2 (March)

This will talk about all the March work i have done for Film Narrative 2.

Finalized the script

After many redrafts of our script “119! we have finally got a version of our script that we are happy with. Bonnie is the Writer of the group and she did a fantastic job creating a piece of work we are all really passionate about. We already had roles thought of however we solidified them shortly after handing in the script. We figured out our roles going forward and when we need to have our work done for each of the departments within the production. As I’m the cinematographer, I’m working on the Storyboard and Shot list.

My Work for the Fiction Project

Storyboard

I really enjoyed getting to do the storyboard. With no limit due to us not actually making the film, I was able to create shots I physically couldn’t do at the level I’m at, so it was a breath of fresh air. I spent a few days creating the storyboard and came up with about 40 different shots. Not only did I improve on my illustrations however it made me understand why filmmakers shoot for coverage. Instead of thinking of each individual shot and cut, I assume they just get the main coverage shots (Wide, OTS, etc.) and then get some insert shots that are crucial. Overall, that made me be more considerate of my time and work process.

Shot list

I didn’t have a template for the shot list (or I couldn’t find one) so I came up with my own trying to get as much information as physically possible. I’m realizing now that I forgot to put in a legend. Something Jack (Director) suggested I will remember this for next time as it would be very helpful to those who aren’t sure what the abbreviations mean. A stupid mistake on my part.

Lighting plan

The lighting plan was interesting. We wanted to have a major contrast in lighting when the twist in our fiction project happened. So we were going for a very dark, gritty noir look when the audience believe it is a police station and then when the twist is revealed, the whole colour palette changes and so does the lighting becoming more high key than low. I looked at film inspirations for colour palettes (I’ll let you see which films you can spot in the images below :) )

Editing sequence breakdown

Introduction

We additionally, got to work on an edit for class. It was a short hospital scene in the film Lethe. Overall, I’m very happy with my edit I took advice from my group and went away to great an edit we were proud of. In the end, we created a total of three edits. I believe I create two different drafts of the edit.

Edit One

The response to my first edit was a lot better than I anticipated. In previous short films, I’ve done whilst there are numerous problems with everything I was always told that my editing isn’t the best. So I went off and did research and practiced on my editing skills taking up jobs on websites like Fiverr and editing people’s YouTube videos just to practice, However, what I realized when editing this short scene that it wasn’t necessarily wrong with my editing (There are things wrong though haha) it was how I prepared my footage for the edit. Rushing takes, making them shorter for actor and not looking at my script which in turn lead to many continuity mistakes. 

The Lethe footage was of the full scene from several different angles and it was a joy to edit. I’ve never had so much freedom. 

I’m going to go over some main parts of my edit.

(Opening vision) Inspired by one of my favourite shows “Attack on Titan” in the first opening of the show we see a dream sequence from the main protagonist who wakes up in a frantic panic. I didn’t initially think of using this idea. I knew I wanted to do something in that expressionist style however wasn’t sure how. So I researched and came across the shows opening. The reception to the opening sequence has gone well. The majority of people really like it and wanted to know how to do it. (I’ll describe in a moment xoxo) Some suggested it be toned down a tad. I can completely understand why they would want this and whilst I am already really happy with it I know it can be improved. 

(How to do the opening edit) I used Premiere Pro to edit the footage. However, I believe this could be done on much less complicated editing software as it was mainly practical effects that sold the scene. The blurriness is all done through the camera (I believe this is through actually removing the lens to give it that distorted feel or possibly rubbing the lens in vaseline to make the image as smooth as possible (I am not the filmmaker however and these are just theories) Additionally, the editing is simply cutting on the beat of the heart scanner (which I found on YouTube) I also began rotating the image and zooming into to give a much more distorted feel. Then I boosted the grain slightly and then lowered the saturation to give it a washed-out look. The final shot was already slowed down however I took the audio into Audacity and added a low pass filter to make it sound muffled instead of slowed which i think came out good. Overall I’m really pleased with this edit and I can’t wait to make changes for the next draft.

I wanted to stick to mainly long takes and focus on the main protagonist. I recently watched Thunder Road and I was really inspired by Jim Cumming’s use of long takes as it grounded the film in reality so that is why I chose to cut a lot less than others. One idea was to focus more on the protagonist when the man (possibly Abe) sits down at her side. I have already shown so much of her and believe his performance is good however, most importantly I feel her dialogue wasn’t as important as his reaction so that’s why I chose to focus on “Abe” instead. 

Towards the end of the scene, I foreshadowed many things from later in the script “The Watch” and “The Purse” reading the script I understood how important those items were in developing the story so I made sure to draw specific attention to them. I agree with the criticism that some of the insert shots last too long. So I’ve taken the initiative to shorten them.

Edit Two

Returning to the edit there were some things I wanted to change. Overall the reception of the original edit was good but there were crucial things that needed to be changed. There was an audio sync issue in one of the takes that when hearing about I had no clue what the teacher was talking about haha, but after checking it I think I fixed it. I hope I fixed it! Additionally, they asked me to tone down the opening shot which I did subtly. I’m very happy with it and the majority of people thought it was fine so when one person suggests I change it I’ll take it on board but I kept it closer to what I envisioned then dramatically reducing the effect. Furthermore, the shot of the wallet was too long so I shortened that and the shot of the watch was too short. I extended it but just to give some reasoning behind it, I have been watching a lot of Satoshi Kon, He is known for his unique style and editing. I wanted to see how short a shot I could cut for the audience to register. In hindsight I must have cut it too short haha!

My Teams work

Tom - He was the producer and the rock of the pre-production process. Whenever I was lost he was kind enough to give me a helping hand and his work on the Call sheets was fantastic. I believe we are working in the same group again for the independent project so I’m really excited about that (To be honest I could say that about everyone in this group haha)

Heather - Heather was the production designer, she was in charge of the mood boards and sketches. I’m really happy as well with her work the mood board is clear and concise I would have loved to see more of what she thought the scene looked like with sketches and her opinions on a colour palette but I think she thought we already had a clear enough idea.

Jack - The Director of the production. I’ve worked with him on loads of projects and he always seems to handle all the stuff given to him with ease. This production was no different I feel sorry for him not actually getting to direct the idea he came up with but I do think he enjoyed helming a great group.

Bonnie - I believe this is Bonnie’s first time writing. I don’t mean to say that as an insult because she did a fantastic job. She was passionate about her ideas, has a great grasp on entertaining dialogue and I just want to see more of what she writes. 

Final thoughts 

I think we created a solid piece of work. There are definitely flaws and obviously after seeing everyone else’s work you are going to think of things we could have done better. However, there is no point worrying about it now, I just have to make sure I implement it into the next project :) I had fun xoxo

Snow Day (Portraits of 119)

Summary: In which Yukihira Raiden tries to be spontaneous and it backfires on him. 

“Yukihira-kun,” Utau gushed as they all stepped out of the stretch limo in front of the Nakiri family’s private ski lodge in Nagano. “Have I ever told you how much your presence at Totsuki has improved my overall quality of life?” 

“Every five minutes since we left the dorm,” he told her, grinning. With Sosuke gone and no weekend plans to speak of, they had been so bored on campus that Raiden decided to bring them all up. “Anyway, enjoy, everybody.” 

“This is way too generous,” Yuna said, watching as a butler came and unloaded all their weekend bags. “It’s too bad Sosuke had to go home this weekend.”

“We just won’t tell him how nice it was,” Enomoto Kairi said to her. “It would be cruel.” 

Raiden shook his head slightly. So it looked like specs was finally going to shoot his shot this time. He then turned to Maria and linked arms with her. “I can’t wait for you to try the hot chocolate. My Aunt Alice always has them ship in chocolate from Belgium. You’re gonna be impressed.” 

She raised her eyebrows in mock-incredulity. “I don’t know. I take my chocolate seriously.”

Raiden was just telling them all about the rooms on the top floor with hot tubs on the balconies when he saw none other than Mimasaka Sumire coming in from the slopes. She was red-cheeked and messy-haired, looking like she’d been skiing all morning.

“What is Hayama-san’s secretary doing here?” Utau asked, her eyes narrowed. 

When she spotted all of them in the lobby, Sumire looked horrified. “No way,” she said quietly. Blinking rapidly, she pulled out her phone and started tapping away furiously. “There’s no way I fucked up the schedule.” 

Raiden felt a twinge of sympathy for her. “You didn’t mess anything up. We were being spontaneous.” 

She tilted her head to the side, and Raiden felt judged to his core for not planning all excursions a month ahead of time. “Spontaneous. Great.”

“Sumire-san,” Saito Kaito called as he stepped in, shaking a considerable amount of snow off his black coat. “We should probably push lunch back since a snowball war just broke out there—” he stopped speaking abruptly once he noticed the Polar Stars. “Oh, shit. It was gonna be such a good weekend, too.” 

Saito and Sumire exchanged a look then. 

“So I take it that Erik brought you up here,” Raiden said to them. “Just you two and Akane?” 

Sumire sighed. “And Bella, and—”

“I think it’s time for the hot tub,” a familiar voice said from just outside the lobby.

“Benedict Ibusaki, of course,” Maria said, shaking her head as Sosuke and Isabella stumbled into the lodge, laughing. “Thought you were going home for the weekend,” she said. 

Sosuke briefly locked eyes with Raiden and then with Yuna, and swore under his breath. “Sorry, guys. I thought it would be less awkward this way.”

“Well, it isn’t,” Mari pointed out. 

“Fuck off, Maria,” Bella warned. “We came up here to have a good time.”

“So did we,” Maria retorted, her shoulders squaring, and Raiden could just sense an Aldini v. Aldini bout coming on. 

“So then why are you all standing here like you’re waiting to start some shit?” Her fiery gaze fell upon the lot of them. “This place has fifteen rooms; we don’t even have to see each other.”

“I can arrange that logistically,” Sumire piped up, and then started tapping away on her phone again.  

“See?” Bella said, resting her hands on her hips. “Just unpack and be normal.”

Aoki Ichiro raised a sheepish hand then. “I agree with Mito-san.”

“As do I!” Utau interjected. “Let’s go de-stress in the sauna.” 

“You’re right,” Raiden told Bella, taking hold of Maria’s hand. “The staff probably already put all your stuff up on the top floor—”

“Actually, Yukihira-kun, we’re on the top floor,” Sumire said. “I believe your things would be on the third floor.” 

Of course they would be. 

“The third floor, then,”  Raiden said through gritted teeth. “Alright. Let’s head up.” 

He had just finished shepherding his friends up the grand stairwell when he heard a high-pitched screech taper off into uninhibited laughter that was unmistakably Akane’s. Against his better judgment, Raiden descended the stairs again and took a covert look out back. 

Akane and Erik were just outside the back door, half-wrestling each other with fists full of powdery snow. 

Erik got Akane pinned on her back and held a snowball in his right hand. “I’m gonna enjoy this, princess.” 

“Wait, I give up!” she said, and Raiden knew from intonation alone that she didn’t mean it. Erik would still fall for it, though; he was always soft for her. 

And the minute he let her up, she smacked him in the face with a formidable clump of snow. Using his size against him, Akane knocked Erik back and then sat on his chest with her knees on either side of him. “Why do you always fall for that?”

“You’re just a good liar.” 

“No,” Akane said, leaning down close to him. “But you’re a bad one.”

Raiden did not stay long enough to see if they started kissing or not, but knew it would haunt him for the rest of the trip nonetheless. 

So much for being spontaneous.
